Sweet Rose Creamery makes small batches of hand-crafted ice cream using organic milk, cream, and eggs, plus fruit and nuts from their favorite famers at the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. They even make their own toppings, sauces and cones daily, so you can always stop in for a fresh scoop. They have a couple non-dairy options available too.

Sitting at the picnic tables on their backyard-style patio feels like classic LA summertime, and flavors like their Café Luxxe Coffee, Cookies & Cream, and Old-Fashioned Vanilla are hard to resist.

Gelato Bar & Espresso Caffé is a classic European style shop on a cute block in Studio City. They serve up fresh, creamy gelato, as the name suggests, plus a couple non-dairy/vegan sorbet options as well as coffee/espresso and baked goods. It's a nice stop for a sweet snack in a welcoming decor. One feels instantly at home sitting around one of the tables inside or out front.

Mashti Malone's serves some of the best ice cream in the city (no joke), with cultural roots in both Ireland, and Iran. It's located in an established Hollywood strip mall, and while the line is never short, the ice cream cone at the end is well worth the wait. Popular flavors include the Rosewater Saffron (with Pistachios, please), and the aromatic Orange Blossom, while the Dried Orchid Root skews more experimental.

Sul & Beans is a Korean Bingsoo (frozen dessert made from milk and bean powder) Café. Pick from flavors like the traditional Soy, Green Tea, or Red Bean, with toppings like fruit, or injeolmi (sweet rice cake). Traditional soups are also on the menu if you’re craving something warm, but the bingsoo bowls are hard to pass up.

Coolhaus is the dream of two LA natives with a passion for architecture and the glorious combination that is Ice Cream and Cookies. Kippy’s Ice Cream makes the world’s first organic non-dairy ice cream and sorbet made with Coconut Cream, Coconut Water, Fresh Organic Fruit, and Raw Honey. This delectable ice cream alternative is not only creamy and savory, but is known to have health benefits such as boosting one's immune system and increasing energy. At the end of the day, Kippy’s makes a delicious dessert with only quality ingredients.

Blockheads Shavery makes Snow Cream (or shaved ice cream) in small batches, fresh, in-store. The texture of this stuff is kind of amazing—fluffy and soft—and the flavors are a treat too. There aren’t many toppings available, and they cost extra, but the snow cream servings are big so you can really enjoy.

Westwood, UCLA $ $ $ $

There are some Angelinos who will drive from anywhere in town just to get their hands on one of Diddy Reise's famous Ice Cream Sandwiches. Diddy Reise allows guests to create their own Ice Cream Sandwich for as little as $2.00, using whatever combination of Ice Cream and Cookies (which are warm and baked fresh every day) that your heart desires.

For those who are looking for something different, Diddy Reise also does Brownie Sundaes and Hawaiian Shaved Ice. The place is cash only and there's usually a sizable line, but stick it out... it's well worth the wait.

This is the first West Coast location for homemade and uniquely flavored Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream. Jeni's ice creams don’t use synthetic flavorings, dyes, or off-the-shelf mixes, making their own concoctions like Sweet Potato Pecan Praline, Wildberry Lavender, and Brown Butter Almond Brittle.

Local Ice is a neighborhood favorite ice cream shop with an old fashioned feel. They serve homemade and organic Ice Cream, NY Italian Ice, Classic Sundaes, Floats, and a decedent chocolate sauce. While the black and white tile floor, and milk jugs filled with toppings mirrors a traditional parlor, the menu spans well-executed staples and creative flavors.

For vegans and lactose intolerant—the Italian Ice are non-dairy.

Sweet Lucie's make traditional and simple ice cream and sorbet using ethically sourced ingredients and bare minimum fuss. Named after the owner’s daughter, Sweet Lucie's carries popular ice cream flavors like Banana, and Chocolate Chip, as well as more exotic options like Black Sesame, and Green Tea Matcha. All ice creams, toppings, sauces and sorbets are certified organic.

Three Twins make flavorful and delicious organic ice cream with an awareness of environmental sustainability. They carefully prepare every batch, usually with a vegan option or two, plus cones, gluten-free & vegan cookies (for sandwiches), milkshakes, sundaes, and floats. There isn’t much seating, so stand while you eat, or take it on the go.

Marina del Rey $ $ $ $

Bonaventura Gelato Lounge offers guests handmade Gelato crafted with playfulness and the Italian culinary heritage of owners Alessandro and Stephanie Bonaventura. Take for example, their Spaghetti (shaped) Gelato Sundae, complete with homemade Strawberry sauce and "Parmesan Cheese" that's actually White Chocolate. Less adventurous eaters may be drawn toward traditional Italian flavors like Olive Oil with Pepper or Lavender Honey. There's also the Geladough: a build your own Donut/Gelato hybrid that's all but impossible to turn down.
